Another politician looks silly: Teenagers squirt French Prime Minister's face with tomato ketchup (Ananova). Oh boy...next time, sir, you need to open your mouth wider.
How Does AOL Fit in the Grand Plan Now? (NY Times): "As Richard Parsons, a renowned corporate diplomat, prepares to take over as AOL Time Warner's chief executive next month, forging that consensus is his most important challenge, and a vital one for the company, the world's largest media conglomerate. America Online's slowing growth over the last year and its failure to meet Wall Street expectations have been a drag on the company's shares. And the absence of a unified vision of America Online's future of just how the Internet can work with old media like movies to deliver vast new profits, as promised is raising questions anew about the wisdom of the merger that created the company two years ago, at the peak of the Internet bubble. While Mr. Case, the company's chairman, Mr. Parsons and Mr. Pittman, the recently returned chief of America Online and the recently designated chief operating officer of AOL Time Warner, are not at one another's throats, they are also not yet agreed on a strategic and tactical plan for the Internet service. Mr. Case, the technology futurist, tends to see the future of America Online in new digital services and gadgets, while Mr. Pittman, the consummate marketer, hopes to build America Online as an advertising vehicle while milking older technologies like traditional Internet access as long as possible."

My Favorite Journals/Blogs Here's my answer to this question on Rice Bowl Journals. Please give these people a try: I have a bias for good writers ("Ear Candy") over good photographers ("Eye Candy"). 1. Yen of Shinkansen. Beautiful mind and beautiful woman. Grew up in the Philippines but now in Japan. Too bad she stopped in June 2001 with no explanation. One of my online friends insists that I was in love in her. I was one of her strongest cheerleaders, that's all. Hehe... 2. "Jody" of An American in Taipei. Fantastic writer who makes her stories like episodes of Friends. Witty and pessimistic. She has a cinematic imagination. And her blog is fiction. Wonderful if she ever gets off of her butt to update more regularly. 3. Omar of Terribly Happy. Journalist in Austin, Texas. The funniest journaler I have seen. He rocks. 4. Bill of Fade In: The Screenplay of My Life. Aspiring TV writer in Chicago. Rivals Omar in his sense of humor. Has an eye for the ladies. 5. Tina of volatile.org. Asian-Causcasian girl from Canada who's now working in Beijing. World traveller. Literary and poetic. A gem of a writer and risk-taker. 6. Pischina of Diary of a Grown Woman. Mother of two, from my city, who has suffered much in life and relationships, but she bares all and inspires me with her resilience. Reading her, especially now, is heartbreaking. She makes you laugh and cry. From her recent entries, start reading here and move into her six-part fairy tale, which sums up her life until now. 7. Jeff of The Tin Man. Gay lawyer in New Jersey, close to Manhattan. Stopped writing in Feb. Very open and explicit about his sexuality and eloquent about his convictions and artistic interests. Wish more of you would have read him. 8. In Passing... Collection of random quotes and snippets of conversation overheard by this girl who's a Berkeley student. Fascinating. She has the ability to listen to several people talking at the same time. 9. Finally, one person who does not wish to be named. A lyrical, passionate, and eloquent writer. Addictive.
Blind Dates They've started a new topic on Rice Bowl Journals: Blind Dates. Here's my answer: Blind dates, for the most part, suck. Yes...adventurous me...I've gone on a few of them. You would think people know you well enough to either pick well for you or to excuse themselves from the process, but that has rarely been true for me. I absolutely hate those dates where you know within the first few minutes that you have barely anything in common and will be bored to death, but you still have to go through the motions and try to keep from drooling when your jaw falls asleep and your mouth hangs open. (That doesn't actually happen to me. I'm still under 65. ;D) At least keep me guessing! Let me find out we have nothing in common at the END of the date! A classically bad date: ONCE UPON A TIME, I took this girl to a French restaurant. It wasn't totally blind because I knew her briefly ahead of time. Beforehand, I knew that she did not like three things: a) seafood, b) dogs, and c) the cold. When we got there, the place was packed, so most newcomers were waiting outside, in the cold evening. I tried to squeeze her inside instead. Entering the room, immediately to our right, we found a huge---dog---lying on the floor with upturned eyes. This girl literally wilted before the dog. She collapsed her body in hysteria and slunk towards the wall, petrified. Now, standing between her and this dog, I looked helplessly at the kitchen. The manager saw us waiting and beamed at us. "Monsieur," he said, "I apologize for the wait. Why don't you have one of our delicious plates of...seafood in the meantime!" "AAAAHHH!" I thought. We finally got a table and she ordered steak. She did not like the steak and just picked at it. When I had finished eating, she had only finished a fourth of it and was making a face. In the meantime, I tried to practice my French with the waiter. She refused to even try speaking a word, killing the atmosphere. We lived happily separate ever after. THE END.
OH MY GOD, Christina! I wake up and find 27 comments in your post below. HAHAHAHAHA... I laughed for at least 1 hour straight. Poor Sean... I hope you see this is all an understandable mistake. They don't mean to hurt your feelings, right (*slap*) Nick?
By the way, I saw your post on Xici.net. Ernie's site is one of the most popular blogs on the Internet. He has all kinds of readers, not mainly homosexual ones. By the way, Cheshire Dave posted the text of his play "The Finest Poet", which I saw last month. Funny. And you learn about poetry slams. From Julie I found this NY Times article that made me cringe. Globe-Hop, but Beware Beauty Lag. "Ms. Dowad, who is in her early 40's, suffers from a kind of frequent-flier body-dysmorphic disorder ¡ª the sneaky feeling that affects women who travel often and must negotiate the radically shifting expectations of feminine beauty from one capital to the next. As more people globe-hop routinely, those who travel between London, New York and Los Angeles ¡ª an especially popular route in the fashion, music and movie industries ¡ª have found that the leaps they must make in personal appearance require much more adjustment and provoke larger insecurities than do simple problems like jet lag or what the word "biscuit" really means."

----Look! some chinese visitors posted comments for Raymond's "How to Run the Chinese Government ".
Due to the different culture between U.S. and China, we have especially viewpoint about my top leaders. I think the style joke is not accepted in China, and we feel a little hazing. By the way, Mr.Jiang is seventy nine year old this year, and I only think he's tired and should retire. Jackey Posted¡¤ Apr 17 2002, 07:40 pm Hi,Raymond,it's unnecessry for you to apologize. In fact, i just think Tiger Cafe should be a bridge to deliver the different life style between us.You know, there are a lots of difference between U.S.and China(mainland),some of them can't be attempered in a short term.Although nowdays in china, there are some "interesting" things(we also think so),but those are our internal business. We also understand your focus on,but i don't like some of them be viewed as a joke, especially showing face to face.Just like we never show 9.11 terrorism attack as a joke to you! I apologize if I offended some of you in China with my joke. I didn't mean it in a bad way. Actually I respect Jiang and what he has tried to do for China.
To be fair, here are some even worse jokes about Bill Clinton and George Bush. For example: The Bush-Gore Dance! You need a sound card to hear this. Thank you, Bess! She posted something very nice about "love" in the comments. I can't read it there, so I'm posting it here. _________________________________ By Bess: I LOVE YOU ÐÂÊÍ I --- INJECT ͶÈë l --- loyal ÖÒ³Ï O --- OBSERVANT ÓÃÐÄ V --- VALIANT ÓÂ¸Ò E --- ENJOYMENT ϲÔà Y --- YES Ô¸Òâ O --- OBLIGATION ÔðÈÎ U --- UNISON ºÍг ËùÒÔ°®ÊÇͶÈ룬Öҳϣ¬ÓÃÐÄ£¬Ó¸ң¬Ï²Ôã¬Ô¸Ò⣬ÔðÈΣ¬»¹ÓкÍг¡£ µ«ÎÒ¾õµÃÕâЩ¶¼²»ÖØÒª£¬×îÖØÒªµÄÊÇ ----°üÈÝ Èç¹ûÄã°®Ò»¸öÈ˲»µ«Òª°®ËûµÄÓŵãÒ²Òª°®ËûµÄȱµã¡£ Èç¹ûÄã²»°üÈݶԷ½ÄǾÍÊÇ×Ô˽ Óöµ½ÊÂÇéµÄʱºò¶àÕ¾ÔÚ¶Ô·½µÄÁ¢³¡ÉÏÏë ÄÐÈËËäÈ»ÓÐʱ´óÄÐÈËÒ»µã£¬µ«¸ü¶àµÄʱºòÊǺ¢×ÓÆøµÄ--ÌرðÔÚ×Ô¼º°®µÄÈËÃæÇ° ÄÐÈ˺ÍÅ®È˲»Í¬£¬ËûÃÇÏëµÄÊÇ´óÊ£¬¶øÅ®ÈËÌ«¹ý×¢ÖØϸ½Ú¡£ Äã˵ÊDz»ÊǶÔÕÉ·òÎÞËùÇó£¿ ÒªÇóÄÇô¶à¸ÉÂð£¿ÒªÇóÌ«¶àµÃ²»µ½µÄʱºò²»¸üÄѹýÂð¡£ ºÃºÃ°ÑÎÕÄãÉí±ßµÄÈË£¬ºÃºÃ°®Ëû£¬ÕäϧËû¡£Èç¹ûÓÐÒ»Ìì²»ÔÚÒ»ÆðÒ²²»»áºó»Ú¡£ ¸ü¶àµÄʱºòÊÇ×Ô¼º¿ªÐľͺᣠ²»¿ªÐľÍÊǸú×Ô¼º¹ý²»È¥¡£

Oh my goodness. I am VERY sorry to hear this. :( My prayers are with you, Sophia, as you deal with this kidney disease. Since my uncle's disease last year (different from Sophia's) was related to his kidneys, it gives me the chills to hear about someone else. We are concerned about you, girl.
Thank you Jane. She sent me this FUNNY video of Zhang Ziyi. Use Windows Media Player.

"And They Lived Happily Ever After..." by Leanne Bell. See what people are saying about it on Rice Bowl Journals. Julie dislikes this book. She thinks Bell is too simplistic, anti-feminist, and generalizes too much from her own marriage. What do you think?

Just added Trixy, in the Philippines, to my reading list. I went through a lot of her writing, and she is fascinating---maybe a Meg Ryan or Cameron Diaz type of girl. She's: 1) funny and witty, 2) an engineer turned manager who really is a humanities person at heart, 3) both a party girl and bookworm, and 4) was a "Cosmo girl" for "30 seconds of fame." HA! Trixy is going in my list of Sex and the City bloggers, with the likes of Min Jung, Christine, Jody, Ginny, and Vicky (stopped writing). I have still never watched that show, but from trying to understand these women and how the show's devil-may-care attitude resonates with them, I feel like I'm watching the Asian version here. But sweeter and less raunchy. It's telling that of these girls, all of them except Min Jung are in Asia now. What does that say about how attitudes and opportunities for women have shifted in Asia?
