A Valentine Prayer. My Friend Jae Got Married.

Ellen's Valentine prayer cracks me up! :p
A GIRL'S PRAYER

Lord, Before I lay me down to sleep,
I pray for a man, who's not a creep,
One who's handsome, smart, and strong,
One who loves to listen long,
One who thinks before he speaks,
When he says he'll call, he won't wait weeks.
I pray that he is gainfully employed,
And when I spend his cash, he won't be annoyed.
Pulls out my chair and opens my door,
Massages my back and begs to do more.
Oh! Send me a man who'll make love to my mind,
Knows what to answer to "How big's my behind?"
One who'll make love till my body's a twitchin',
In the hall, in the garden, and in the kitchen!
I pray that this man will love me to no end,
And never attempt to hit on my friend.

A GUY'S PRAYER

Lord, I pray for a nympho with huge boobs
Who owns a liquor store and likes to fish.

One of my best friends, Jae, just got married today!!!!

MANY MANY CONGRATULATIONS, my dear friend!

Jae (short for "Jae-Kul") is Korean and lives in Seoul. We used to live together as housemates. He's a great guy with whom to hang around and share insights, and every time I see him we spend hours just talking and talking, about life and love. We click very very well. He's a six foot tall, handsome guy, with a beaming cherubic face. I think of him like one of those laughing Buddhas. He looks very innocent---one reason why girls like him.

Jae is very ready to embrace and enjoy life, with a mischievous side. But not malicious. Now with a wife, he's gotta settle down, of course. Hehe... They will come to California for part of their honeymoon, and later he wants to come back to the U.S. to live. He is not materialistic like a lot of Asians, more open-minded, and a sweet guy.

Originally from Seoul, he used to work for Samsung (I think) out of college. Then he came here to the Deep South to study, in Alabama. Must have been some culture shock for someone from straight-laced Korea, but Jae adapted well. He dated white, black, and Hispanic girls---all colors. He took up country dancing, which he still loves. He's the only Asian I know who has a cowboy hat and loves country dancing with blonde "cowgirls." We went dancing at The Saddlerack in San Jose when it was still in business. He took pleasure in trying interracial relationships, turning heads by kissing his black girlfriend in public. Then he moved to Seattle for more study, and finally he came here to the Valley.

One day, he came to me with a tortured expression on his face. His mom had been diagnosed with a tumor in her brain. A big one. Jae was devastated. He sold his beat-up white station wagon, quit his job, and moved back to Seoul to take care of his parents. He spent months in the hospital after she got her operation and helped nurse her to recovery. During that time he didn't really think of anything else for months. Finally, he started working a bit for his dad's business. He started going out with girls again.

For a while, he had not dated Korean girls while in the U.S. He'd been so excited going out with girls from totally different backgrounds. It had been fun. But in Seoul he rediscovered native Korean girls; he would gush to me about them. Haha! When you first meet Jae, he seems a bit shy and coy, which is part of the attraction of his baby face. But he was uncomfortable approaching girls cold, especially in a shy culture like Korea. So after going out with the ones recommended by friends and family, he tried the Internet!

Jae placed an ad on Skylove.com (write this down, Duke!) He discovered all sorts of girls here: doctors, snobby princesses, PhD students, businesswomen, girls afraid of becoming lonely ajumas (old women). He ended up going out with twelve of them, until he met his now wife!

So here's a toast to you, Jae. To the end of singledom. The end of boyish ebullience. Three cheers for my dear friend. I will see him and his wife later this year.
